Fetal Monitoring

Fetal monitoring refers to ongoing tracing of a baby's heart rate during pregnancy.

Patients must be pre-registered for delivery at BC Women's to attend this clinic
About

When you visit your doctor, they are able to listen to the baby's heartbeat and count the number of beats per minute. If more information is needed, you may be asked to come for fetal monitoring, also called a Non-Stress Test (NST).

The pattern of a baby's heartbeat oftern reflects the baby's condition. This test provides an ongoing tracing of the heart rate and may also show the contractions you could be experiencing. The certified Perinatal Nurse who performs your test will explain everything to you. They will evaluate the results and consult a physician if needed during your test. Your doctor or Midwife will be updated with the results of the NST. Further appointments may be booked depending on the reason for your referral and the individual results.

Please bring your BC Care Card and Photo ID to your appointment.
We are a scent-free clinic - please do not use scented products such as cologne/perfume, lotions, hair products when you come to the clinic in order to protect those patients/staff who are sensitive to these.

Appointments usually take 45 minutes. Your test may be shorter or longer, depending on your baby's activiey at the time of the test.
