Hand hygiene practices should be more frequent if you’re visiting us compared to when you’re at home, yet we have seen that patients, families and visitors wash their hands less than 10 per cent of the recommended time.
The children and family members of hospital staff are helping our Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) team in a campaign to improve hand hygiene practices among patients, families and visitors. Washing your hands or using hand sanitizer is the best thing you can do to prevent the spread of infection or illnesses.
The Hand Hygiene Heroes videos highlight the four different touch points or moments in hospital in which it is important for patients and visitors to wash or sanitize their hands:
- Before entering any new area of the hospital
- Before eating or providing any hands on care
- After contact with other people or body fluids
- After leaving any area of the hospital
The campaign also includes a video demonstrating the proper way to wash and sanitize your hands so you don’t miss any tricky spots, like between your fingers.
