Bone Density Service

The Bone Density Service provides bone density testing, a type of X-ray that checks the amount of minerals (like calcium) in bones.
Health professionals often refer patients to this service to check the strength of their bones, to monitor their treatment, or to confirm if they are more likely to break (fracture) a bone.

Referral information

Diagnostic bone mineral densitometry is only indicated if it is likely to alter treatment. It is an MSP-covered service for patients with moderate to higher risk of fracture. If indicated, primary care providers such as a family doctor or nurse practitioner can refer a patient to this service. Visit the Bone Density Service referral page for further information.

Appointment details

Preparing for the test

  • 5 days before the test: Do not schedule any nuclear medicine tests or contrast dye tests. These tests can affect your bone density test results.
  • 24 hours before the test: Do not take any calcium supplements, antacids or vitamins.
Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, you can eat normally before the bone density scan. If you need to cancel your appointment, please call the clinic directly.

On the day of the test

  • Let us know if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
  • Do not wear clothes with snaps, metal buttons or zippers. Wear comfortable pants, shorts or a skirt with a drawstring or elastic waistband.
  • Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment to fill out a questionnaire about your medical history. Check in with the receptionist when you arrive.
  • Bring your photo ID and BC Care Card (personal health number).
  • Please do your best to not bring children under 12 unless you also bring a support person to care for them during your test.

After the test

  • There are no after-effects from this test .
  • We will send your results to your doctor within five working days. If your doctor does not receive your results within two weeks, ask them to contact us.
