Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Clinic referral

We provide compassionate and comprehensive care in the evaluation, treatment and support of people experiencing recurrent pregnancy loss.
​​​Our areas of expertise include reproductive medicine, high-risk obstetrics, internal medicine, advanced surgical gynecology, medical genetics, and managing chronic histiocytic intervillositis.​

Patient eligibility  ​

At the Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Clinic, we accept referrals for people who have experienced: ​

  • ​Two or more pregnancy losses at less than or equal to10 weeks gestation including biochemical, euploid, untested, or PUL, and excluding ectopic, molar, or aneuploidy.
  • One or more pregnancy losses between 10 weeks and 20 weeks gestation by CRL (crown-rump length) on ultrasound including euploid or untested. 
  • Patients greater than or equal to 1 documented, unexplained pregnancy loss at any gestational age WITH: 
    • Chronic histiocytic intervillositis OR
    • Known antiphospholipid syndrome or systemic lupus erythematosus OR
    • Known parental translocation
We acknowledge that this doesn’t encompass all types of pregnancy loss that can occur. Across Canada, there is no single definition of recurrent pregnancy loss. 

Ineligibility 

  • Non-residents or patients without active medical coverage.
  • Patients living outside of British Columbia or Yukon.
  • Patients who are currently pregnant. 
  • Patients with unresolved current pregnancy loss (i.e., need negative urine or serum hCG).
  • Patients awaiting embryopathology results after a second pregnancy loss.
  • Patients with secondary infertility (i.e., 12 months for patients aged < 35 or 6 months for patients aged > 35).
  • Patients seeking surgical correction with only 1 or no losses (Please refer to community gynecology).
  • Dual referrals to both a fertility clinic and the RPL clinic.
  • Patients under the active care of another clinic/provider for RPL (i.e., within 12 months).
  • Patients undergoing assisted reproductive technology.
  • Previous RPL patients who have had a live birth are not eligible for re-referral unless they experience a subsequent pregnancy loss.
Please note that:
  • A large number of losses are due to random aneuploidy (abnormal number of chromosomes) in the embryo.
  • We recommend cytogenetic testing at the time of 2nd and subsequent pregnancy loss.
  • Unexplained pregnancy loss refers to a pregnancy proven to be 46XX/46XY or where karyotype was not obtained.
  • We are unable to provide early Pregnancy Monitoring for patients living outside of the Lower Mainland. Referring Providers will be responsible for monitoring their patients with advice available from the RPL clinic.​

1Complete a form

To make a referral, please complete our referral form  (PDF) and include all patient information including consultation with summary of each pregnancy, ultrasounds, blood type, pathology reports, karyotyping, bloodwork, HSG/Hysteroscopy or other anatomic evaluation.

2Send the referral

Fax the completed referral form and all supporting documentation to: 778-504-9762.

3Post referral

Our nursing team reviews and triages referrals based on the patients’ medical and reproductive history. To allow for an expedi​ted triage, please ensure your referral package is complete.

4Appointment with a provider

Once you have submitted your referral, no further action is required. Patients will be contacted directly for an appointment and next steps.  ​
