Reproductive Mental Health Referrals

The Reproductive Mental Health Clinic provides care to people and their families who are dealing with mental health challenges and conditions before, during and up to eight months after pregnancy or birth.

Patient eligibility

Our clinic provides care to people from across the province.

We accept referrals from family doctors, nurse practitioners, specialists and midwives.

You can refer patients when they are pregnant or up to 8 months postpartum. We also offer a one-time pre-pregnancy consultation for people who are trying to become pregnant, and have concerns about how their mental health diagnosis or their psychiatric medications may impact their pregnancy and/or postpartum.

We offer a one-time group pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMS) education session for two hours. This includes presentations from a psychiatrist and gynecologist on both lifestyle and medication management for women suffering from pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder.

Ineligibility

  • People who are dealing with infertility, pregnancy loss or are eight months or more postpartum
  • People who are experiencing a mental health crisis. For mental health crises, patients should visit their nearest emergency department for care

We are a teaching hospital associated with the UBC Department of Medicine. Patients may be seen by a medical student or resident.

Referral steps

1Review and complete the referral form

A doctor, nurse practitioner or midwife can complete the referral form (PDF) in full. Please include/attach any relevant medical reports, such as previous psychiatric assessments.

2Submit the referral form

Fax the completed referral form and any supporting documentation to: 604-875-3115

3Review and triage of referral

We will triage the referral within one to three weeks and if accepted, we will place the patient on our waitlist. If the patient does not meet the eligibility criteria, we will send a letter to the referring care provider. If eligible, the patient will then receive an email with information about our waitlist group and how to register, as well as a handout on self-care.

4Appointment booking

Our program booking clerks will contact the patient when an appointment becomes available. We will inform them of the appointment date and time and of any necessary steps they should take before their appointment. We will then send them an email with the appointment date and time, and a letter on what to expect during their first visit.

If anything should change with the patient while they are on the waitlist for care, or if there is any further information to share, please call our booking clerks: 604-875-2025.
