How to apply

The intake process can take several months. Please be comprehensive in completing the application as we pre-screen and select individuals from the information provided.

We are seeking volunteers who:

  • Can attend an orientation training session
  • Are in good physical and mental health
  • Have up-to-date immunizations
  • Can make a 12 month commitment
  • Provide two character references
  • Complete PHSA online Privacy & Confidentiality course
  • Submit a Criminal Record Check
  • Have paid or volunteer experience with children (needed for some positions)

Most of our volunteer opportunities are during week days.

2Interview

The coordinator of volunteers will interviewed you individually. We will discuss possible areas of placement with you and outline the current service needs. If accepted to the program you must attend an orientation/ training session. 

3Follow-up

BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre, BC Children's Hospital and the Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children are fortunate to have many individuals who are interested in volunteering. If we have not been in touch with you within six months, please contact volunteer@cw.bc.ca to update your application.

About us

About us

The Volunteer Resources Department provides volunteer support for BC Women's Hospital + Health Centre, BC Children's Hospital and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children. The department is responsible for recruiting, choosing and assigning volunteers for a variety of patient and service-based areas within the three facilities.

This support is meant to augment and supplement existing services providing for the psycho-social, emotional, and developmental needs of patients and their families. Volunteers do not perform the functions of paid professional staff.

Our vision

Our vision is to improve the health of children, youth and women by working with partners, including community partners like volunteers, to ensure access to the best health care in the best setting. At each of the facilities, volunteers contribute greatly to the hospital experience of families.
