The Bone Density Service provides bone density testing also called dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA or DEXA).
This low-dose X-ray test measures bone strength and mineral content primarily in the hip and spine to detect and monitor bone loss and assess fracture risk.
A diagnostic bone mineral density test is an MSP-covered service for patients with moderate to higher risk of fracture, as outlined in the Osteoporosis Guideline at
BC Guidelines - Province of British Columbia. It is indicated if it is likely to alter treatment.
You can determine the risk by using the FRAX calculator at
FRAXplus®.
Patients need a referral from a primary care provider such as a family doctor or nurse practitioner, using the standard bone densitometry requisition.
