Information for surgeons.

Booking of all surgical procedures at BC Women's Hospital is based on the principle of FIFO (first in, first out) and according to provincially determined diagnosis specific target times for surgery. This is to ensure women receive timely access to surgery in compliance with Ministry of Health guidelines.

Booking policies have been revised as of April 2024. Please ensure that you and your office staff are familiar with current booking policies for Gynecologic Surgical Services.

Patient eligibility

The Gynecologic Surgical Services program uses Procedural Sedation for many minor procedures.

To ensure patient safety for nurse-administered sedation, patients must be healthy, and willing to have their minor procedure without a general anesthetic.

Anesthesia options for Gynecologic Surgery
The Anesthesia Pre-assessment and Optimization Service provides pre-operative consultation to BC Women's surgical patients. Guidelines for consultation and eligibility for procedures at BC Women's are outlined here

Booking procedure

The booking package including the Pre-anesthesia Questionnaire, Patient Demographics and Order Sets has been revised effective September 2020. Booking for Procedural Sedation and General Anesthesia will be completed on the same booking package.
