Before giving birth (antepartum)

Family is welcome from 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.

After giving birth (postpartum)

Family is welcome 12 - 2 p.m. and 6 - 9 p.m. One dedicated family member/support person may stay with the new mother 24 hours a day to help with personal or baby care.

Special requests can be made to the charge nurse. Please limit the number of visitors at any one time for the comfort of yourself and your roommate.

Anyone who has an infectious illness (such as a respiratory infection, tuberculosis, German measles, chicken pox, or a skin infection) must not visit the hospital.

Please ask your family and friends to respect these visiting hours as you need quiet time to recover from birth and begin to learn about your baby.

For patients on our specialized care wards such as Evergreen (antepartum) or FIR (harm reduction/substance use), contact the hospital operator at 604 875-2424 to connect with the ward for individual visiting hours.

Room service

Room service is offered and delivered to inpatients at the hospital. Patients may call to order meals between 7 a.m. - 6:15 p.m., seven days a week at 604-875-2233. See our menus (PDF).

Menu items are subject to change. For the most up-to-date menu, please contact the Diet Office at 604-875-2233.

Additional menus are available based on the diet orders, dietary restrictions and allergies of the patient.

Nourishment station

Stations are available in inpatient units in the BC Women’s Hospital.

Located on the 1st floor of the Shaughnessy building, B-wing.

Located on the 1st floor lobby of the BC Children's Ambulatory Care building, near entrance 42.

Located on the 1st floor lobby of the BC Children's Hospital building, near entrance 11.

Located on the 1st floor lobby of the BC Women’s Hospital building, near entrance 93.

Vending machines

Vending machines are available in various locations. You can find them:

  • In the cafeteria
  • By the café seating area at entrance 11
  • On the 2nd floor of the Ambulatory Care building, directly above Starbucks
  • Near inpatient units in the BC Children's Hospital building

Food trucks

Food trucks visit the hospital on a rotation schedule. You can find them in the cul-de-sac at entrance 35 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on various week days.

Safeway Food & Pharmacy is located about three blocks away from the site at 990 West King Edward Avenue and there are some restaurants in the area.



Se​curity & safety

Everyone has a right to feel respected and comfortable while they are receiving or providing care. The safety of everyone in our hospital is extremely important to us.

BC Women's Hospital has security on-site 24/7 to support the entire campus community.

All relational security officers receive education in Indigenous cultural safety and humility as well as trauma- and violence-informed care. They wear a blue vest and shirt with khaki pants and work throughout the campus.​

Where to stay

Accommodation options are available to families of patients receiving care at our hospital. They are available to patients and their immediate families only. They are not for visits related to tourism or business travel.

Some accommodation supports may be lower in cost than typical Vancouver prices because of donation support.
