Anesthesia Consultation

We provide consultations about the use of analgesia/anesthesia in maternity and gynecology care. Patients must be pre-registered for delivery or gynecological services at BC Women's.
About

​​Reasons for referral for anesthesia consultation may include:

  • Anyone requesting information about analgesia/anesthesia during labour and delivery of their baby
  • A significant risk for hemorrhage (e.g. placenta previa)
  • Anyone known to have had difficulty with anesthesia in the past
  • Medical disorders such as heart disease or pulmonary disease (e.g. cystic fibrosis)
  • Blood disorders (e.g. aplastic anemia)
  • Coagulation problems/therapeutic heparing
  • Obesity
  • Musculoskeletal disorders (e.g. scoliosis, dwarfism, short stature)
  • Neurological diseases (e.g. multiple sclerosis, paralysis)
  • Autoimmune disorders (e.g. lupus, rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Transplant patients
  • Multiple drug allergies
  • Anyone using medications which may impact anesthesia (e.g. anti-hypertensives)
  • Infectious diseases
  • Gynecology Surgical Daycare patients requiring pre-surgery consultation

Appointments

Clinics are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Please bring your BC Care Card and Photo ID to your appointment.

We are a scent-free clinic. Please do not use scented products such as cologne/perfume, lotions or hair products when you come to the clinic in order to protect those patients/staff who are sensitive to these.

  • Registration and scheduling clerk
  • Anesthesiologist - a doctor who specializes in anesthesia
  • Clinical students - clerks, doctors
  • Research staff - approved by WHRI and/or BCCHRI
