If you join Connecting Pregnancy Group Prenatal Care at BC Women's, you will meet regularly during your pregnancy. In the group, there are 8-10 other women or couples with due dates around the same time as yours. Each group is facilitated by a doctor and a nurse.
At each meeting, you will have some private time with the doctor for a "baby and mom" check-up. Then, along with the other members of your group, you will learn about important issues related to pregnancy, birth and the time after birth. Meetings may include a video, guest speaker or presentation, followed by discussion.
The following topics are covered during the prenatal groups:
- Health nutrition for pregnancy
- Exercise during pregnancy
- Tips for good back health during pregnancy
- Relaxation and comfort measures for labour
- The stages of labour
- The birth experience
- Interventions during labour
- Newborn care
- Parenting issues
- Sharing birth stories

This model of care is based on the Centering Pregnancy Program developed by the Centering Healthcare Institute
. Centering incorporates assessment, support, and education, and alters routine prenatal care by bringing women out of exam rooms and into groups for their care.
