Connecting Pregnancy Group Prenatal Care

If you join Connecting Pregnancy Group Prenatal Care at BC Women's, you will meet regularly during your pregnancy.  In the group, there are 8-10 other women or couples with due dates around the same time as yours. Each group is facilitated by a doctor and a nurse.

At each meeting, you will have some private time with the doctor for a "baby and mom" check-up.  Then, along with the other members of your group, you will learn about important issues related to pregnancy, birth and the time after birth.  Meetings may include a video, guest speaker or presentation, followed by discussion.

The following topics are covered during the prenatal groups:

  • Health nutrition for pregnancy
  • Exercise during pregnancy
  • Tips for good back health during pregnancy
  • Relaxation and comfort measures for labour
  • The stages of labour
  • The birth experience
  • Interventions during labour
  • Breastfeeding
  • Newborn care
  • Parenting issues
  • Sharing birth stories

This model of care is based on the Centering Pregnancy Program developed by the Centering Healthcare Institute.  Centering incorporates assessment, support, and education, and alters routine prenatal care by bringing women out of exam rooms and into groups for their care.
