Established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada is the cornerstone of the Canadian Honours System that recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
As Officer, Dr. Shaw is recognized for national service for her contributions as a leader in advancing women’s health care. Not only is she trailblazing the way for women’s health at one of Canada’s most specialized women’s hospitals, Dr. Shaw is renowned for her international work advocating to improve women’s reproductive rights and freedoms, and to improve the health of women, newborns and children.
Seen as a leading expert in women’s health, Dr. Shaw regularly receives requests to participate on an international level such as the Fifth Replenishment Conference of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria hosted by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Lancet’s Maternal Health Series.
We are so proud to have Dr. Shaw on the BC Women’s team acting as a strong advocate in women’s health and ultimately gender equality.
We are also happy to announce and congratulate Dr. Michael Klein, investigator emeritus, BC Children’s Hospital, for being appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada. Dr. Klein received recognition for his outstanding contributions on a local level. He is a pioneer in integrating family medicine and maternity care in Canada.
Over the course of his distinguished career as a clinician, professor and researcher, Dr. Klein has helped improve health outcomes for babies and new mothers by making maternity care an integral part of family medicine and conducting leading-edge research on childbirth practices.
