– a historic decision that gave women the right to access abortion care without any restrictions, in recognition that this was a personal medical decision between a woman and her physician. Previously, women had to face barriers that included getting the approval of hospital committees and also limited access to abortions in hospitals only. This landmark decision was celebrated across our country by Dr. Henry Morgentaler, the notable physician who led the struggle to change this law along with  thousands of activists who dedicated themselves for decades to advance reproductive rights for women in Canada and beyond.

This case became known as the “Morgentaler decision” and stands as one of Canada’s strongest legal precedents for the advancement of human rights. Today, a woman is able to access abortion care in community-based clinics and hospitals, in confidential, supportive and safe settings that respect her right to make this decision with her care providers in the context of her own life situation, needs and values.

BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre upholds women’s right to access safe abortion care through providing quality services to women from across BC. Through education and training programs for practicing physicians, medical students and residents, BC Women’s is committed to ensuring that current and future health care professionals not only have the knowledge and skills needed to provide the best and safe care to women, but also to support and sustain the availability of abortion services. BC Women’s believes that women should be able to access this fundamental reproductive service whenever they need it, wherever they are.
