On January 28, 1988, the Supreme Court of Canada decriminalized abortion. This important abortion rights decision is known as the Morgentaler decision.

A pro-choice Canadian physician, Dr. Henry Morgentaler was committed to ensuring women were able to exercise their reproductive and body rights.

"Access to safe abortion significantly improved across Canada due to the Morgentaler decision. Safe abortion saves lives and improves health outcomes for women and their families. BC Women's abortion care, research and training programs support families through the province to better healthier lives," said Dr. Wendy Norman, CIHR Chair in Family Planning Research.

Today, Canadian women have the legal right to access safe abortion services. Canada is one of the only countries in the world that doesn’t restrict access to abortions. By protecting women’s rights, the Morgentaler decision has effectively saved the lives of women across Canada who need abortion services.

At BC Women’s we are committed to ensuring safety and the provision of the best care for all our patients and families. Through our CARE Clinic, we provide abortion and counselling services for women who are experiencing unintended pregnancy, or who require an abortion for genetic or medical reasons.

If you have questions about the CARE program, please visit our Abortion & Contraception section.
