Fetal Assessment
When you visit your doctor, he or she is able to listen to the baby’s heartbeat and count the number of beats per minute. If more information is needed, you may be asked to come for fetal monitoring, also called a non stress test. The pattern of a baby’s heartbeat often reflects the baby’s condition. This test provides an ongoing tracing of the heart rate, and may also show the contractions you are experiencing. The certified nurse who performs your test will explain everything to you. She will evaluate the results. A physician is available for consultation if there is a need during your test. Your doctor will be contacted if necessary. Further appointments will be booked depending on the reason for your referral and the individual results. Appointments usually take 45 minutes. Your test may be shorter or longer, depending on your baby’s condition at the time of the test. If you have other appointments at the hospital, we will try and co-ordinate your visits. Your partner, or another person of your choosing, is welcome to accompany you for your test. No special preparation is required. You may eat and drink as per your normal routine. If you are diabetic, you will want to have your snack with you. You will be more comfortable if you empty your bladder before the test.
