Babies born in British Columbia and the Yukon are screened for 18 disorders (effective November 2009), with a 19th disorder being added in the fall of 2010.
About 40 babies per year will be identified with one of these disorders. The most common disorders are congenital hypothyroidism (CH), cystic fibrosis (CF), medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MCAD), and phenylketonuria (PKU).
This section provides information on disorders screened, blood collection, and the Newborn Screening Guideline. As a by-product of screening, some CF carriers and hemoglobinopathy carriers will be identified.
