Multidisciplinary Team
The Oak Tree Clinic staff consists of a team of health care professionals, each with special expertise in the care of women and children living with HIV.
Adult Infectious Diseases HIV SpecialistsDr. David Burdge is the Medical Co-Director of the clinic and the Director of adult service and the Oak Tree Clinic Research Program. He sits on the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS Therapeutic Guideline Committee, and is a principal co-author of provincial and national guidelines for the care of women and pregnant women with HIV. He is the principal investigator on a variety of research projects, and has particular interest in gender and women’s issues in HIV.
Dr. Neora Pick works in the Oak Tree Clinic and for Internal Medicine. She is an infectious disease specialist with experience in HIV care. Dr. Pick is involved in the Patient Safety Committee and has a special interest in women's care. She is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia.
Pediatric HIV/Infectious Diseases SpecialistsDr. Jack Forbes is the Medical Co-Director of the clinic and the Director of the pediatric service. He is a member of the Division of Infectious and Immunologic Diseases at BC Children’s Hospital. Dr. Forbes is a member of the Canadian Pediatric AIDS Research Group (CPARG) and sits on the expert advisory committee on HIV/AIDS to the Therapeutic Products Program (TPP) of Health Canada. He sits on the Therapeutic Guideline Committee of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, has written the Provincial Guidelines for the Care of HIV Infected Children, and worked with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation in Africa.
Dr. Ariane Alimenti works part-time in the Oak Tree Clinic and is a pediatrician with experience in HIV care from her practice in Belgium. She is in charge of the program of follow-up for un-infected but anti-retroviral exposed infants, and assists Dr. Forbes in caring for HIV positive infants and children.
Dr. Jane Finlay is a pediatric infectious diseases specialist working part time in the Oak Tree Clinic.
Obstetrics/Gynecology Specialists with HIV expertiseDr. Deborah Money is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist with fellowship training in Infectious Diseases. She has been involved in the care of pregnant women with HIV since 1993 when she worked with Dr. Heather Watts in Seattle and participated in the ACTG 076 trial. In addition, she is Division Head of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of British Columbia.
Dr. Dena Bloomenthal is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist with a fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine. She spent six months of her fellowship concentrating on developing expertise in the management of pregnancy in HIV infected women, through her work as a fellow at Oak Tree Clinic.
Dr. Jan Christilaw is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist who is the past president of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada and the Head of Specialized Women Health at BC Women’s. She conducts regular gynecology clinics at Oak Tree Clinic.
Receptionist/SecretariesBonnie Morin and Damir Moric are the Program Secretaries. They facilitate the day to day functioning of the clinic. They are usually the first persons people talk to by phone and see on entering the clinic. They are responsible for scheduling patient appointments and the telephone flow of information in and out of the clinic.
Ali Hildebrandt works part time for Oak Tree Clinic. She dictatypes the reports and consultation letters and also does academic typing.
PharmacistsCarlo Quaia counsels patients and physicians on optimal antiretroviral therapies, coordinates the Provincial Perinatal HIV Prophylaxis Program, and is actively involved in a variety of education and research projects.
Dipti Manchharam works part time in the clinic.
DietitianDiana Johansen works full time at the Oak Tree Clinic. She counsels patients on HIV-related nutrition issues, including healthy eating, metabolic complications and micronutrient supplementation. She also does body composition measurements. She is active in advocacy, outreach and research and is the author of B.C.’s Therapeutic Nutrition Guidelines for HIV/AIDS. Diana has been doing extensive international work through the Pan-American Health Organization.
Social WorkerLouanna Atkinson provides clinical social work services to Oak Tree patients and families. She counsels around adjustment to an HIV diagnosis and assesses patients’ needs for support services in their communities, offering referral and advocacy when needed.
Nursing staffDulce Feder is the Nurse Clinician in the Oak Tree Clinic. She coordinates the clinic and gives general nursing care.
Laura Vicol works at Oak Tree Clinic as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She provides primary care, gynecological screening and routine HIV monitoring to adult clients seen within the program. She collaborates with the pediatric team by participating in the assessment and follow up care of exposed, but uninfected newborns. In addition, her work is focused on sexual health education, contraception and primary prevention.
Clinic AideThe Clinic Aide does the height, weight, temperature measurements; provides childcare (for children attending the clinic); helps the nurse when needed; takes care of provision of snacks, juice and coffee for patients; and helps people get to x-ray and the lab.
Outreach WorkersCara Moody works three days a week with the Oak Tree Clinic, in partnership with the Positive Women’s Network (PWN). Cara focuses on supporting HIV positive and vulnerable women in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. She accompanies patients to the clinic and supports women in accessing other care and services. Jodi Loudfoot works three days a week with Oak Tree Clinic. She is located at The Vivian (Transitional Housing Program for Women). She also supports women in the Downtown Eastside, assists with patient accompaniment to the clinic, and helps women access other care and support services. Research Staff
Evelyn Maan coordinates many of the current research projects at Oak Tree Clinic including the osteoporosis study, the Canadian Women HIV Study, and Pediatric Neurodevelopmental Study.
Volunteers
The volunteers assist the Clinic Aide with childcare in the clinic, snacks and a host of other tasks.
