Research & Evaluation
In addition to our clinical services, the Aurora Centre is involved in a variety of research and knowledge translation activities. Through our Provincial Research Consultant we:
- Undertake research on women and substance issues, in collaboration with the BC Centre of Excellence on Women’s Health An example is the recently completed study of substance use on the part of women accessing transition house services in B.C.
- Identify research and policy documents related to women and substance use issues, and ensure that key stakeholders are made aware of this information. For example, we work with the Canadian Centre on Substance Use to ensure that key documents on women and substance use are available through their web sites.
- Bring together representatives of other agencies and programs to determine their information needs, and to share information on research related to treatment, early intervention, harm reduction and prevention with women. For example, we help facilitate of quarterly meetings of the Vancouver and Area Women’s Addictions Services Providers Network. We are currently editing a book on women and substance use issues to be published by the Centre of Addiction and Mental Health in Ontario. This book includes submissions by many of the presenters from the national “Celebrating and Moving Forth Conference on Women’s Substance Use Treatment” we sponsored in September, 2003, to mark our 30th anniversary.
- Work with institutions of higher learning to promote research, training and professional education on women's substance use. For example, we have developed curriculum on fetal alcohol syndrome and other women’s substance use issues for the Justice Institute of BC.
- Work with research and policy bodies related to women and substance use. For example, we participated on the advisory committee that developed the recent Provincial Addictions Strategy.
Program Evaluation At Aurora Centre, we are committed to continuous quality improvement - and we conduct ongoing client satisfaction and outcome evaluations for all treatment programming. We value feedback from all clients on the impact of their experience at Aurora both during treatment and in the aftercare period. Our 2003 program evaluation summary is available from the annual reports on request. From time to time, we conduct focused evaluations of specific program initiatives such as:
- women-centred smoking interventions in the Nursing Research Journal .
- acupuncture services in the Research Report.
- aftercare programming at WAF where this research is posted.
