Outreach & Collaboration
As a provincial resource on women’s substance use treatment, Aurora is committed to providing leadership locally, provincially, and nationally on women’s substance use issues. We hope that through outreach and collaboration with policy makers, program providers, and others with a stake in women’s treatment and prevention, we will continuously expand our knowledge of women’s substance use patterns and treatment needs as well as increase our ability to apply this information to our work. Some examples of our outreach work include:
- General educational initiatives – We sponsor meetings, videoconferences and workshops on women and substance use issues and welcome inquiries about how we can collaborate to meet the needs for information and training on women and substance use issues in BC, and beyond.
- Collaboration with the provincial government – We are currently working with several Ministries towards the implementation of a strategic plan entitled “Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: A Strategic Plan for B.C.” and the Provincial Addictions and Mental Health Framework.
- Collaboration with institutions of higher learning – We collaborate with representatives of the University of British Columbia and the Justice Institute of BC on developing and delivering curriculum on women and substance use issues.
- Prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) – We work closely with the Fir Square Combined Care Unit at BC Women’s, the Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children, the YWCA of Greater Vancouver, Sheway, the BC Reproductive Care Program, the BC Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health and many others on research and policy development that identify best practices in preventing FASD through promoting women’s health.
- Collaboration with other BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre programs – We work with our colleagues at BC Women’s to identify ways of integrating information and intervention on substance use, into the holistic and women-centred approaches used by others offering specialized women’s health care.
