Asian Women’s Health
The Asian Women’s Health Clinic is a partnership program of several health agencies in Vancouver, B.C. The Clinic provides cervical and breast cancer screening services (pap smears, breast exams, mammograms) for women of Asian origin (primarily Chinese) along with women’s wellness education for the Asian population. All staff—physicians, nurses, clerical staff and volunteers—are Asian women. All education material has been developed using focus groups and extensive consultation with Asian women. The Asian Women’s Health Clinic was created because Chinese women were identified as having a four times higher incidence of invasive cancer of the cervix than Caucasian women. Research suggested this reflected lower levels of Pap test screening in the Chinese population. Since its inception in 1994, the staff have performed close to 7,000 Pap smears. Results indicate abnormal result rates similar to the larger B.C. population.
