Laboratory Services
The Microbiology and Virology Laboratory provides comprehensive microbiology and virology diagnostic and consultation services as well as infection control services for BC. The microbiology and virology laboratory processes more than 100,000 specimens each year.

Our skilled medical technologists provide a wide range of pediatric and maternal tests for inpatients and outpatients from Children’s and Women’s as well as for community physicians. We act as a reference centre for other microbiology and virology testing and infection control services throughout BC and in the Yukon. In addition, the combination of the infection control service within the laboratory ensures that infection control issues unique to pediatric and maternal health receive immediate, relevant and appropriate attention from experienced infection control experts.
Most diagnostic microbiology laboratories in the province focus their efforts on adult medicine. This laboratory deals with critical issues specific to pediatric and maternal microbiology and virology. For example, neonatal nursery, pediatric oncology, transplant and high-risk pregnancy patients present special diagnostic and infection control challenges. Our specific consultative and laboratory services are tailored to address these concerns and to fulfill the needs of this patient population.
We believe that a high-quality interaction among the laboratory, the physician and the patient is critical for the accurate and cost-effective management of cases. To this end, we work closely with our users, providing advice regarding specimen collection, test ordering, and interpretation as well as infection control. Our affiliation with the University of British Columbia and our expertise also provides opportunities for clinical and basic research as well as training for medical students, residents, fellows, laboratory technologists, infection control nurses, and interested physicians.
Our goal is to advance the diagnostic frontier of infectious disease and to set the highest standards for the diagnosis and control of infections in pediatric and maternal patients. We strive to provide the most current and useful tests and consultations and to promote a productive, stimulating and collaborative environment in the battle against pediatric and maternal infections.
