Services
Community Development Facilitator With the guidance of the Advisory Committee, the facilitator ensures that programs are community driven and community based. The facilitator’s role is to respond to aboriginal women’s health needs and requests in both urban and non-urban settings. The role of the facilitator includes:
- program administration
- assisting community groups to plan, prioritize and implement health initiatives
- collaborating with community partners to provide education, information, and resources for women’s health
- building networks of aboriginal health care providers
- providing links between communities and BC Women’s Health Centre
- collaborating with communities in planning regional Women and Wellness conferences
- providing liaison between BC Women’s programs and aboriginal communities
Women's Wellness Clinics The program staff assists Aboriginal communities to develop and implement well women’s clinics in their own communities. The focus of the clinic is to increase access to pap smears, medical breast exams, and screening for sexually transmitted infections. *Guidelines for development of clinics (PDF) Education Workshops and Conferences The program provides a one-time grant to assist in the development of a regional women’s conference. When requested by women’s groups, we provide workshops on a variety of health issues and cultural awareness to those who work with Aboriginal women and their families.

Our First Nations Patient Advocate works with Aboriginal women, children, and their families of BC Children's Hospital and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children, and BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre to ensure they receive the information and support they need.
What can an Advocate do for you and your family?
- Connect you with services
- Tell you about your rights and benefits
- Help you if you have a complaint
- Provide support and comfort. For example, sit with you during Care Plan or Discharge Plan meetings to lend FNPA support.
- Escort you to any medical appointment’s while you are on site at BC Children’s Hospital & BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre
- Connect you with an Elder for spiritual or emotional support
- Help to organize traditional ceremonies for you
- Provide clothing and toiletries for you
- Provide emergency clothing and hygiene care packages
- Act as a Health Care Liaison between patient/caregiver and health care team members
- Connect you with Aboriginal and community services

On many occasions, the Advocate has received many hugs from patients and caregivers who were gratified about the services provided.
The First Nations Patient Advocate is available Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
