What's Involved
Participation in the Fetal and Newborn Behavior study began during pregnancy and continues into the newborn and infant period. Full study details are outlined in the consent form that you were given when you agreed to participate.
Here is a summary of the study steps.
At Recruitment (27 weeks gestation or less)
We use standardized questionnaires to assess your general and mental health.
35 – 36 Weeks Gestation
We measure fetal movement, fetal heart rate and maternal and fetal blood flow using ultrasound and fetal monitoring equipment. We also collect blood and saliva samples from you, and play sounds for your unborn baby to hear. Participants receive remuneration at the end of this visit. At Delivery
We arrange for hospital staff to draw blood from you as well as your baby’s umbilical cord.
Newborn Period
During the PKU test (a routine blood test that all infants in British Columbia have to make sure they are healthy), we record your baby’s heart rate and the sound of his/her cry, videotape facial responses, and collect saliva from your baby. We will play sounds to your baby prior to the PKU test.
Day 5-6 Home Visit
We, along with a Registered Occupational/Physical Therapist, visit you and your infant at home to assess your baby’s behavior using a standard assessment. We will also collect saliva from your baby and ask you to complete questionnaires to provide information about your state of wellbeing, and your baby’s behavior and health.
3 Month Questionnaires
We mail you a package of questionnaires about your state of wellbeing and your baby’s behavior and health, to be completed at home.
6 Month Visit
We show your baby some objects, pictures and/or people talking on a screen while your baby sits on your lap. Your baby is videotaped during the study and his/her heart rate is recorded. We also collect saliva from your baby. Participants receive remuneration at the end of this visit.
10 Month Visit
We repeat the events of the 6 Month Visit. In addition, a Registered Occupational/Physical Therapist assesses your baby's growth and development. Participants receive remuneration at the end of this visit.
3.5 Year Follow-up We mail you a package of questionnaires about your state of wellbeing and your child’s behavior and health and a one-day saliva package to collect saliva from your child, to be completed at home.
