Part of your health plan for your body probably includes having an annual pap smear done. This is a good idea because your doctor can make sure that your pelvic organs (uterus, tubes and ovaries) are of normal size and shape, and located in the normal position. And, he/she can check for signs of infections or abnormalities of the cervix that could signal cancer.
For the most part, your family doctor or gynecologist can help you with these needs. You may also like to learn more by checking out the health information on the website for the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada.
However, there are some women who may need to access one of the specialized programs that BC Women's offers, for example, the Asian Women's Health Clinic and the Access clinic.
The Asian Women’s Health Clinic was created because Chinese women were identified as having a four times higher incidence of invasive cancer of the cervix than Caucasian women. Research suggested this reflected lower levels of Pap test screening in the Chinese population.
The Access clinic offers breast (breast exams and mammograms) and gynecological (pap smears) cancer screening to women with disabilities who cannot be seen at their doctor’s office.
In this section you will find links to these specific programs and services.
