Diabetes is a condition in which the body either cannot produce insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.
According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, more than 2 million canadians have diabetes. The association identifies 3 main types of diabetes. Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes (occuring during pregnancy).
If you have diabetes or a history of diabetes during pregnancy, you may also be at risk for heart disease.
If you think you have diabetes, or know someone who does or wants more information regarding diabetes, visit the Canadian Diabetes Association website.
Also, BC Children's Hospital has a series of diabetes handouts for patients and their families, and a great resources page that provides links to more information on diabetes.
