Parking at Children’s and Women’s
There are numerous parking options available at the BC Women’s, BC Children’s and the Sunny Hill site. Please check out the various passes available and the parking policies.
Parking – Sunny Hill Site
Parking at the Sunny Hill site is available at no charge and on a “first come – first served” basis. Please respect the posted signage for the reserved or restricted parking spaces.
Parking – Oak Street Site
Parking is regulated at the BC Children’s and BC Women’s Oak Street site, and pay parking is in effect 24 hours per day. There is also a limited amount of free parking available on nearby city streets. Please obey posted signs and respect our neighbours.
While there are approximately 1,800 parking spaces available on-site, we serve a large number of patients and it is an extremely busy site. Please arrive early for appointments and visits to ensure you have plenty of time (10 -15 minutes) to drive around, if necessary, to find a place to park.
The “ring road” circling the entire site provides access to all parking lots, including the parade. If the parking areas seem full, you will generally always be able to find a place to park in the lot located in the south-east corner, across the ring road from Brock Fahrni Pavilion, the veteran’s long-term care facility. (Parking areas and rates are listed below.)
Please be aware that some spaces are signed or metered for “short-term” and/or “patient only” parking or otherwise restricted in their use. These spaces are designated and strictly enforced by ticketing to ensure turn-over in critical areas. Please use long term parking spaces unless you really need the space and are sure you can return to your car in the time allowed. Various parking regulations are in effect and posted throughout the site, including “no parking” at yellow curbing. (See enforcement regulations listed below).
Do not use “Emergency Only” designated spaces in front of Emergency unless you are delivering a patient to the emergency room. Vehicles must pay the meter and must register in the emergency department when checking in a patient. Please respect these spaces for those in urgent and critical need.
Entering the Site
You can enter the site through three gates: Oak Street (main gate), 28th Avenue, and Heather Street. Please note that the 28th Avenue gate is not accessible from the east due to City of Vancouver traffic calming restriction measures and curbing; you must approach the 28th Avenue gate from the west (Oak Street). A parking attendant is on duty 24 hours at the Oak Street gate. Entrance at all entrances is available 24 hours but the exit hours are restricted at 28th Avenue and Heather Street exits.
Disability Parking
Legal “disability” permits are required to park in “disability” parking spaces. We recognize permits from all legal jurisdictions. Spaces are located at major entrances to buildings and at various areas throughout the site:
- Parkade – Children’s side - 9 spaces next to elevator.
- Women’s side - 5 spaces next to elevator
- Children’s Hospital Admitting Entrance - 2 spaces
- Women’s Hospital Admitting Entrance - 2 spaces
- Labour Patient Admitting Entrance - 2 spaces
- Ambulatory Care Building - 5 spaces in lot at north end
- “L-Block, Shaughnessy Building - 2 spaces
- Women’s Health Centre - 6 spaces
- Brock Fahrni Pavilion - 2 spaces
- Other locations throughout C&W - 9 spaces
Parking Enforcement
Parking regulations include enforcement and the issuing of parking violation notices. Regulatory signs are posted where they apply because we need to provide parking for as many people as possible and to accommodate the great variety of parking requirements. There is no parking allowed at any yellow painted curbing throughout the site. The following enforcement policies apply:
- Parking regulations are enforced by the parking management company.
- Parking violation notices, which incur an escalating fee penalty if not paid promptly, are issued by the parking management company for on-site infractions.
- Instructions and information regarding violations are contained on the violation notice.
Vehicles that accumulate several unpaid violation notices will result in the towing and impound of the vehicle off-site.
- Appeals and disputes involving the issue of a violation notice are to be addressed to the parking operating company, whose contact numbers appear on the violation notice.
- Parking enforcement issues are addressed by the on-site Parking Supervisor (604-875-2086).
Parking Areas
The hospital is surrounded by a “ring” road which encircles the entire site. Except for the “Emergency” area short-term parking and parking in front of the Chan Centre and Research Institute, all parking areas are accessed via the ring road after entering through the entrance gates, including the parkade under Children’s Hospital and Women’ Hospital.
- Emergency - 1-hour parking meters in effect, please use other lots for long-term parking.
- Patient Only - “Patient only” parking is located in parkade near elevators and in front of Women’s Health Centre. Some patient only parking is designated as short-term, 2-hour only.
Disability Parking - Legal “disability” permits are required to park in “disability” parking spaces. We recognize permits from all legal jurisdictions. Spaces are located at major entrances to buildings and at various areas throughout the site. (see disability parking above).
- Physicians Only - Physician only parking is located immediately adjacent to Women’s Labour Patient Admitting and directly across from it on the ring road. Parking is reserved and allowed by special permit only.
- General Parking - All other parking throughout the site is shared by patients, visitors, and staff, unless otherwise designated or reserved by signage.
- Parkade - Enter from “ring” road just south of Oak Street entrance gate. Elevators access the lobbies of both Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital. Designated patient parking and disability parking are provided adjacent to the elevators.
Automated Pay Stations and Parking Fees Payments
While hourly/daily parking fees can be paid at the exit cashier booth when leaving, we provide five Automated Pay Stations throughout the site so patrons may avoid cashier waiting lines, and thus leave faster. The pay stations allow patrons to pay their parking fees on the way back to their vehicle so they may then exit more quickly through the “EXPRESS” lane rather than having to wait at the cashier. The system is similar to that used at Vancouver International Airport. To pay at the pay station, you must take your entry ticket with you to insert at the pay station instead of leaving it in your vehicle.
All passes, except the “Family 30-day Pass”, are only sold at the automated pay stations to reduce processing and waiting times at the exit cashier booth.

RV Overnight Parking Spaces
IMPORTANT NOTICE: No RV parking available on site May 27 through July 4, 2006.
RV Parking At the Children’s and Women’s Hospital site is extremely limited, with only four RV spaces available for overnight parking. Overnight RV parking is only allowed in the designated RV spaces, due to building code requirements. RVs may not park overnight anywhere else on the site due to local codes.
RV overnight parking is available only to the immediate family of patients admitted to Children’s and BC Women’s Hospital. To help accommodate as many people as possible, stays are limited to only one month in duration.
Please contact the Parking Supervisor (604-875-2000, local 2086) on site to inquire about RV parking availability. All requests must be authorized by the Parking Supervisor. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate all requests. Please do not arrive without contacting the Parking Supervisor in advance as we will not be able to accommodate you and your RV. RVs parked without prior authorization or parked overnight in spaces outside the designated RV area will be required to move, and will be removed from the site at the owner’s risk and expense if necessary.
