Anesthesia Consultations
This referral clinic provides consultations with an anesthesiologist (doctor with special training in anesthetics) about the use of analgesia/anesthesia in labour and delivery, or surgery. Reasons for referral include:
- Any woman requesting information about analgesia/anesthesia for labour and delivery
- A significant risk of hemorrhage: placenta previa
- Women known to have difficulties with previous anesthesia
- Medical disorders such as heart disease or pulmonary disease (e.g. cystic fibrosis)
- Blood disorders (e.g. aplastic anemia)
- Coagulation problems/therapeutic heparin
- Obesity
- Musculoskeletal disorders (e.g. scoliosis, short-stature/dwarfism)
- Neurological diseases (e.g. multiple sclerosis, paralysis)
- Autoimmune disorders (e.g. lupus, rheumatoid arthritis)
- Transplant patients
- Multiple drug allergies
- Women on drugs which may impact anesthesia (e.g. anti-hypertensives)
- Infectious diseases
- Surgical daycare women requiring consultation pre-surgery
