Services
BC Women's prenatal diagnostic program provides a variety of specialized health services and counselling to women. These include the following:
- Ultrasound: Ultrasound is used to confirm your pregnancy and due date and to evaluate the development and general well-being of your baby.
- Prenatal Genetic Screening tells you the chance of your baby having a chromosome abnormality like Down syndrome or a neural tube defect. If a risk is identified, you will be offered a prenatal diagnostic procedure.
- Prenatal Diagnostic Procedures: BC Women's is the main referral centre in B.C. for the prenatal diagnosis of genetic disorders and birth defects. Diagnostic procedures are performed in cooperation with the Medical Genetics Program. Common procedures include:
- The Advanced Maternal Age (AMA) program is an option if you will be 40 years or older at the time of your delivery. Your physician or midwife may refer you to our Program for Prenatal Diagnostic Procedures.
- Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment: When a prenatal ultrasound identifies possible or actual genetic birth defects in a fetus, experts from Medical Genetics, Maternal/Fetal Medicine, Ultrasound and pediatrics work together to plan care.
- Fetal Assessment: Electronic fetal heart monitoring evaluates your baby's heart rate response during sleep/awake periods and during changes (such as contractions) in your uterus. Your doctor or midwife may recommend this test after your 26th week of pregnancy.
- Induction of Labour may be an option in cases where a pregnancy has gone later than its due date.
