Reproductive Mental Health
The Reproductive Mental Health Program offers training to Residents, Medical students, Nursing students, Psychology interns and Counselling students who are interested in learning more about psychiatric disorders seen in women during pregnancy and the postpartum period. It also offers training in the assessment and treatment of patients with psychiatric conditions related to infertility, pregnancy loss and related to the premenstrual period. Trainees are exposed to different members of our multi- disciplinary team, including psychiatrists, psychologists, nurse clinicians and counselors.
The most common disorders treated include: Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder and the Anxiety Disorders, including Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Treatments include pharmacotherapy and non-pharmacological treatments. Special consideration is given to the risks and benefits of treatment with medications during pregnancy and in breastfeeding mothers.
Most of the patients are seen in an out-patient setting but there are some in-patient consultations to the obstetrical wards.
Trainees will also get experience with different psychotherapies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, in both individual and Group settings.
