This program provides inpatient and outpatient consultative services to both high and low risk obstetrics. BC Women’s is a stand-alone maternity hospital, with full access to the laboratory and radiology infrastructure of BC Children’s Hospital. This allows the trainee an opportunity to provide front-line care for women with a variety of medical problems in pregnancy. Our consultants have active, hospital-based practices that cover a variety of areas of obstetric medicine including subspecialty clinics in Endocrinology, Haematology, and Infectious Diseases. There will also be an opportunity to interact clinically, in the outpatient and inpatient settings, with Maternal-Fetal Medicine, General Obstetrics, Obstetric Anaesthesia, Family Practice, Neonatology, Genetics, and Ultrasound.
Consultants:
Dr. Jason Kong (Endocrinology)
Dr. Laura Magee (General Obstetric Medicine, Clinical Pharmacology)
Dr. Sue Purkiss (General Obstetric Medicine)
Dr. Sophie Clarke (Endocrinology)
Dr. Neora Pick (Infectious Diseases)
Dr. David Thompson (Endocrinology)
Dr. Peter Tsang (Haematology)
There is also an active research programme, particularly in the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (L. Magee) and diabetes (D. Thompson and J. Kong).
Rotations can be tailored to meet the specific goals of individual trainees from diverse backgrounds, including internal medicine and obstetrics. Experiences can be arranged that consist of longitudinal clinic attendance to one/two month electives. A one-month rotation will not involve inpatient consultation with all members of the team. After-hours on-call is covered by one consultant for one week, starting on a Monday. Trainees are normally expected to cover consults each week day and there is one week of day + night on-call which includes a weekend during a 4-week rotation. On-call is out-of-hospital.
There is also the opportunity to arrange a self-funded Fellowship depending on the trainee’s background and interests.
