The new Acute Care Centre and Expanded Programs for BC Women's Hospital
Work is underway at BC Children's Hospital (Children's) and BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre (Women's) to make way for construction of a new Acute Care Centre (ACC
) scheduled to begin in late 2014.
Over the next four years, we will create a living breathing community of hope and healing with the future ACC and incorporate more relaxing green space and walkways on the hospitals grounds. In Phase 3
, the Birthing Program at Women's will be expanded and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children will be relocated to Oak Street.
Preparing for the new ACC
For the past six months, teams have been replacing and upgrading necessary infrastructure services such as water, gas and data lines. These upgrades will ensure that the new infrastructure for the ACC will be seamlessly integrated with other existing buildings.
For the latest construction information please visit www.newcw.ca.
The new ACC will be built in the centre of the hospital campus to provide close, convenient access for patients accessing multiple departments. The new structure will replace two wings of the old Shaughnessy Hospital. Before construction of the new ACC can begin, the wings currently occupying the space will need to be demolished.
Did you know
- In order to demolish the current structures, numerous programs and services need to be relocated. To date, 90 of 136 programs have been relocated; all but ten programs remain on site.
- By 2014, over 40,000 patients and their families will receive treatment in newly renovated outpatient facilities.

In February 2013, three teams: Affinity Partnerships, Oak Street Health Partners and Plenary Health
were invited to compete for the opportunity to design, build, and finance and maintain the new Acute Care Centre.
Over the past few months, these three teams have been working closely with clinical staff to better understand how healthcare will be delivered in the new ACC and to ensure that their designs are reflective of the users’ needs. This fall, the three teams will each submit their proposals. By spring 2014, the successful building team will be selected by mid 2014.
